Congratulations! You have written your novel or work of non-fiction. It’s a task that has taken physical energy, intellectual passion, an endless willingness to go back into the fray and tame the wild creature it became in the hours you were not writing it, and now it is at the stage when it must be made ready for public show. Editing has a great deal in common with writing. It’s intense and exhilarating, and it requires a deep and generous engagement at the level of the narrative arc, the structure, the sentence, the word and the punctuation mark. 

The relationship between writer and editor is as particular and powerful as any of our most intimate and important relationships. There has to be trust and honesty, and a shared vision of the work and how to bring it into its finest articulation.
